Outdoors Early Years
Details
Our Outdoors Early Years setting is so unique! It’s a bit like nursery or pre-school, but totally outside, very child-led and with nature at its core. Children spend their days in a totally learner-centred environment, immersed in the natural surroundings of the Early Years Area on The Wild Meadow.
Location:
The Wild Meadow
Age Group:
2.5 – 5 years
Our Adventures:
Entering the area through the beautiful split-log gate, you’ll immediately stumble upon rosy-cheeked children elbow-deep in the water tray, filling teapots and pouring them out down a ramp. They watch the water sloshing over a pile of shells that Acting Manager Lucy has brought in for them to explore. Past them, there will be others making soup in the mud kitchen, fetching ingredients from the reed bed, with a smiling adult watching on. If you take a stroll into the shady grey willows, you’ll be greeted by the muddy wellies of a child mid-swing and hear the excited squealing of others high up in the tree.
Creeping under the branches, you come back out on a path that leads to the Willow Dome, around which the whole space centres. It is under here that children can be found exploring the charcoal they made the week previously or sitting with an adult making little bird feeders with pine cones. Here, in the winter, we have a log burner, which children love to help stoke.
Peeking inside the Hygge Shed you’ll see children snuggled amongst pillows reading a story or having an afternoon nap. Bags and lunchboxes are lined up in another shelter, behind which are the composting toilets and an area of a wild wee!
Outdoors Early Years is a beautiful mixture of the Forest School Ethos and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Children are given autonomy over their space and are cherished for who they are. They are given the freedom to take risks and get messy. We regularly receive feedback about how much children grow in confidence from being with us and we are honoured to be a part of the lives of such an amazing bunch of small humans!

As we are a totally outdoor setting, the colder months can be tricky for our youngest attendees. While children aged 2.5 years old are welcome to attend in the warmer months (i.e., in the Summer Term and the first half of the Autumn Term), we do ask that children are at least 3 years old by October half term in order to attend during the colder months (i.e., the second half of the Autumn Term and the Spring Term).
If you’d like to find out more about our Outdoors Early Years setting, we would love to send you our Early Years Service Info Pack and invite you to come for a visit with your child. Please email Rach, Co-Director and Administrative Manager, at rach4learninginnature@gmail.com to arrange a visit.
